Open Arms Locally

1st Annual Sully Elementary Grand Prix –
In March the Open Arms volunteer team from our local partner, Sterling Park Baptist Church, came together to bless the children of Sully Elementary school with their 1st annual pinewood grand prix race. Over two weekends the children and volunteers built cars and relationships as they assembled, painted, and raced together. Along with trophies for speed and design, the children and their parents were encouraged out of Hebrews 12:1 to “run the race” marked out for them. Click here for more pictures on our Facebook page.

2014 Run for Hope “The Mud Run”
On Saturday April 5th runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages joined together at Claude Moore Park for the 2nd running of the Open Arms 5K.  This year’s theme turned out to be MUD!  There was slipping, there was sliding, there were sneakers left behind in the goop.  There were no speed records set but there were lots of laughs, lots of friends and family and all for a good cause.  The proceeds of this year’s event went to our fund set aside for local missions in Sterling Park, VA. Click here for more about the race as well as photos.

Open Arms in Brazil

OA Soccer Clubs Minister to children through the “beautiful game” – In Brazil, the land of Pele and 5 World Cup titles, the language that speaks most loudly to the youth is futebol.  Like Jesus, who spoke in the language of his day to fishermen and farmers, so Open Arms seeks to share gospel truth through the medium of soccer.  But don’t get the wrong idea, Open Arms teams are in it to win it, as evidenced by the recent 12-0 trouncing (in love) of one local youth club by one of our teams.  For more information about these programs and how they are changing lives, click HERE.

Open Arms kids and volunteers march in annual parade – In Assis-Brazil, the city of Open Arms founding, the children of several of our programs, and their mentor/leaders, marched in an annual solidarity parade to encourage residents to give to and get involved with organizations that serve the children of the city.  The parade organizer told our Board Vice-President, Carlos Azevedo, that it was the best parade they’ve had yet!

Another Open Arms Cornerstone Program – Limão Verde Indian Reservation
Since she set out from her hometown of Assis in 2010, and headed further into the interior of Brazil to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul near the border with Bolivia, OA missionary Sarita Romeiro hasn’t looked back.  She’s mobilized and trained volunteer teams to plant three Cornerstone Programs in that time.  The latest of these is located at the Limão Verde Indian reservation among the Terena Indian tribe.  Sarita has invitations from several other reservations to assist them in establishing an Open Arms program for their children.  The hope of Christ is a powerful thing.  Click HERE for more photographs.
