Bruno & Abby Gomes

Location: Assis, SP – Brazil

Bruno & Abby took two very different paths to arrive on the mission field with Open Arms.  We invite you to get to know their stories and their story.

After coming to faith in Jesus and getting free from drug addiction, Bruno volunteered with Open Arms for five years while going back to school, eventually finishing his high school education and his undergraduate degree in Physical Education, before embarking on a course in Theology. Bruno joined OAW as a full time “Agent of Hope” in February of 2017.

Enter Abby – God continued to bless Bruno when in 2016 he met a young lady named Abby Smith.  A Brazilian who had been adopted by an American family and grew up in Virginia, Abby had come to Brazil as part of a short-term mission team from Reston Bible Church (www.restonbible.org).  One more time God demonstrated His grace in Bruno’s life.  While serving together on mission their hearts became knit together.  After a long distance courtship, more mission trips, and focused preparation, Bruno & Abby were married in December of 2020.

BRUNO & ABBY’S CURRENT MINISTRY: Today, Bruno & Abby minister full-time in several marginalized neighborhoods in Assis, Brazil.  There they work with at-risk children and youth, many of whom are physically and emotionally abused by families who are heavily involved in drugs and crime. Their work includes overseeing neighborhood programs where children are loved and cared for as they learn about the love of Jesus through biblical principles they can apply in their homes and communities.

Bruno & Abby’s ministry also involves home/family visits, sports programs, food distribution and biblical counseling, while forming partnerships with healthy local churches.  In addition, Abby’s degree in Social Work allows her to bless the entire mission team, helping them to assess and address the needs of the children in the healthiest way possible.
